Ladder Competition

Competition Procedures (see also Rules, below)

  1. Submission of Entries

Entries should be submitted as an attachment to an e-mail addressed to: samcolley@btinternet.com, the e-mail indicating that the image is for the ladder competition. Submission should be made on or before the date indicated in the club programme for entry of images in the club’s main monthly competitions, although the images will be judged by the members themselves under the procedure described below.

  2. Quality of Image

Entries should be in JPEG format and, for ease and speed of transmission by e-mail, should also be no more than1024 horizontal by 768 pixels vertical and with a file size of no more than 450 kb. These satisfy the requirements of other club and external digital competition rules.

In order to achieve the most uniform quality of colour rendering, a consistency of monitor calibration is advisable. It is recommended, therefore, that members should calibrate their monitor using the club’s Spyder equipment. A colour temperature of 6500 deg. K should be aimed for

  3. Image Title

Members should give their entries a title, but a sequential number will be added by the ladder competition secretary for marking purposes before circulating for judging by all members.

  4. Processing of Entries

On receipt of all entries, the ladder competition secretary will give them a sequential number and send all entries by e-mail to all participating members, whether or not they have entered the competition. This will be done about two weeks prior to the club meeting when judging of the main monthly competition takes place.
  5. The images will be distributed in the form of attachments to an e-mail. Members may use whatever software is preferred by them for viewing the competition entries, but the HP Photosmart software can be downloaded free of charge by clicking on this link:

Marks (see 5 below) should be e-mailed to samcolley@btinternet.com no later than a full week prior to the competition judging night. This will allow the results of the ladder competition to be announced at the same time as the main monthly competition. In any case, the results will be posted on the club notice board and also e-mailed to members

  6. Marking Procedure

When the entries are circulated for marking, another attachment to the e-mail will be a marking card in Microsoft Excel format. If this cannot be used by a member, for whatever reason, the marks may be submitted in any other suitable format. This card should be filled in by the marker and returned by e-mail to the ladder competition secretary (see 4 above).

    Rules

  1. The competition is for digital images. The results will be declared on the same evenings as the main monthly club competitions.

  1. Marks are awarded to each image prior to the competition evening by all the club members with e-mail addresses who choose to participate. The procedure for submitting entries, distributing the images for marking and collecting the marks is covered by a separate procedures document.

  1. No distinction is made between beginners’ or advanced entries and the images as distributed for marking will be anonymous and without commentary.

  1. The title of each image will be included with the distributed copy, but the name of the author will not be included.

  1. The images may be of any subject chosen by the competitor.

  1. The images must not have been entered in any format in any other competition, but may be entered in any format in a subsequent club or external competition.

  1. The images must be in JPEG format, 1024 vertical by 768 horizontal max pixel size and a file size of 450 kb maximum.

  1. Marks are added together and converted into points on a percentage basis. This percentage mark counts towards the Ladder Trophy. This marking system ensures that the images will receive a similar number of points, whatever the number of members participating in the judging.

  1. Each entry is awarded marks out of 5 on merit. Competitors are asked to award the maximum mark of 5 to their own entries. All entries must be awarded a mark. A zero score is not permissible. An unmarked entry, or zero, will void the score card.

  1. The maximum entry per member will be one image in each competition (normally five). However, should a member miss an entry in one of the competitions, a double entry will be allowed in one of the following competitions.
